Uber And Lyft Driver Dress Code Explained

Last updated on January 5, 2018 at 10:41 am 10 Comments

For many people, driving for Uber and Lyft is their first time making money without having a boss tell them what to do. There isn’t really any formal training, which ends up making new drivers wonder how they are supposed to prepare for their first day of work.

One question Uber and Lyft drivers ask is:

“What kind of attire should I wear when I start driving?”

Let me explain.

When you sign up for Uber or Lyft, you are signing up as an independent contractor. What this means is Uber and Lyft are paying you to complete their jobs that they assign to you (picking up and dropping off passengers), but they don’t get to tell you how to complete the task.

This means you are allowed to decide what kind of clothing is appropriate for you.

If you want to dress up as if you were going to a wedding, then go for it.

If you stayed in your PJs all day and decided that’s how you wanted to dress for work, that’s perfectly fine too. The choice is completely up to you.

Just don’t dress up in your birthday suit, that might cause some issues.

If you felt like being different every day, you could always have a different outfit for every day of the week.

Monday you dress up in all pink like a flamingo.

Tuesday all green like the Incredible Hulk

Wednesday, you paint yourself orange and dress up like Donald Trump(no political comments please).

and so on…

There’s also the holidays to think about as well.

St. Patricks Day just passed, how many dressed up in green and became Irish for the day?

Halloween, you could dress up as a monster in the spirit of the holiday. Just think about keeping the face mask at home as some customers are going to feel more comfortable seeing your actual face. But nonetheless, have fun with your costume.

Christmas, You could dress up like Santa Clause and give everybody coal. Or be one of Santa’s little helpers instead.

Don’t forget about the other holidays too.

One thing to remember, the way you dress could have an impact on your driver rating.

Even though you are allowed, and I’m all for, just wearing PJs and driving around, many people’s first impressions of a person are their appearance.

Someone that looks like they just rolled out of bed with nappy hair and dressed in their PJs may not look appealing to every passenger that jumps in your vehicle.

Your appearance doesn’t look the most professional and might cause a passenger to ding you a star or two even if the rest of the ride is pleasant for them.

This doesn’t mean you have to dress in a suit and tie, but being well-groomed wearing a polo shirt and some nice jeans will leave a better impression than nappy hair and ragged clothes.

Dress according to the platform you are driving on

While casual clothing is perfectly fine if you drive a more luxurious vehicle on a higher platform like Uber Select or Lyft premier it may be better to dress a little more formal.

Passengers are paying higher prices for the ride which means they will also appreciate well-dressed drivers more as well.

Overall, the consensus is usually the better dressed you are the better the rating you can get to. But, like I said, this doesn’t mean you have to go overboard.

Wear a little bit of your personality and enjoy the drive.

I’ve driven over 10,000 rides past 3 years in So Cal. When I drive XL and Select I wear jeans and long sleeve. When I drove X I just wore shorts and t-shirt or jeans. 4.95 rating.
It’s starting to get Hot here so i will wear some dry fit shirts for XL and bring a long sleeve dry fit to switch into in LA for Select requests.
Hope that helps. But you’re the boss do as you please! Have fun!

Is it against the Lyft rules to wear the pink polo shirt that says Lyft Driver? People are being negative about it to me. I just wanted to ask and see.

I wanted to know what do Lyft drivers get paid by the hour before tips. Im only allowed to earn $1,080 per month, but that doesnt have to include tips. Please advise. Also this would be a great side job and I would be very appreciative of the opportunity.
    Thank you

      Hey David,
Lyft Drivers get paid 75% of the fare. It is not an hourly wage, and pay can vary by market, and by day depending how busy or slow it is. If you are allowed to earn $1,080 a month before tips, then you can sign up and just drive until you reached your goal. Once you reach your limit, take the rest of the month off, and drive again at the beginning of the next month.

      Hope that helps.

I’ve gone out in a wifebeater before but that was cuz my a.c. was out and only did a few rides as a result. Mostly it’s basketball shorts and a t shirt. I go for comfort so I can have more casual fun. This gets reflected in my passengers experience which got me back up to 4.9. Don’t try too hard. Enjoy what you are doing and your passengers will too. I drive all hours fyi.

Thanks this was a lot of help. I was wondering before I felt comfortable. I also was only thinking of driving during the day and maybe early evening before everyone got drunk.
