On the Uber platform both the driver and passenger rate each other anything from a 1-5 star depending on the satisfaction with one another.
If you are an Uber driver and receive enough low star ratings you can get kicked off the platform. But what about the Uber passengers? Is there any negative effects to having a low passenger rating?
Today, I discuss a story about a passenger that I gave a one star rating to, and how the rating system actually affects passengers on the Uber platform.
Can Uber Passengers Get Banned From Enough Low Ratings
The sad truth is you can’t. No matter how low your customer rating becomes you will not get banned from getting rides.
Drivers actually still have a chance of getting matched up with that same rider.
I know this from personal experience.
I picked up this guy close to four in the morning. It was a slow night. So I was waiting a little longer than usual once I was at the passenger pickup spot. It was downtown, so there were still some people walking around.
Because passengers aren’t required to take a photo I have no way of knowing what the rider looks like until he or she gets in my car.
I sat there waiting for 15 minutes, texted him a few times, and even called a few times to no avail.
As I’m about to cancel the ride, the guy that has been pacing back and forth in front of my car for 15 minutes looks at me and puts up his hand signaling to get my attention.
He walks up my car and ask if I was waiting for so and so, which was his name.
I was a little irritated. But, like I said, it was a slow night and he needed a ride driving about 45 minutes away.
I knew it was gonna be a good fare because of the distance so I was cool with taking him.
He gets in and before we drive to his destination he ask me to stop at his hotel. He said he just needs to grab a few things it would take “only” 5 minutes.
I’m getting paid and then have a semi-long trip after. So I said OK.
We pull up to his hotel, he gets out, and I shut my car off to save gas while I’m waiting.
I figured 5 minutes would be 10 minutes anyways.
After waiting for 20 minutes, I sent him a text and gave him a call.
He never responded back.
Since I’m getting paid, even if it’s only a little bit per minute, I just kept waiting.
I guess, at the time, I was also slightly curious about what my pay would be for driving a mile and sitting there for a longtime after.
After 45 minutes of waiting for my Uber passenger, I decided to call it a night and end the ride.
This ride was over a year ago so I don’t remember the exact fare, but getting paid for basically just sitting there at 15 cents a minute was not a good payment for a ride.
I could’ve made more money ending the ride at drop off and picking somebody else up.
I was just trying to be nice that night, I guess.
I assume he decided to just crash at the hotel instead of hanging out with his girl because that was the intended destination that he missed that night.
Because the fact that I waited 15 minutes while he talked on the phone in front of me, and then basically bailed out on the me without a word at the hotel, I was a little disgruntled and rated him a 1 star.
At the time, I assumed I wouldn’t have to worry about him anymore.
However, I did end up picking him up again awhile later.
This time, at least, the ride was quick and short without any issues or waiting extended periods of time.
I’ve also picked up other riders with ratings as low as a 2 star which I just think is absurd.
The Only Negative Effect To Having A Low Uber Passenger Rating
The only negative effect to Uber drivers rating passengers badly is it could take a lot longer for you to get a ride from other Uber drivers.
They will look at your rating and say “next” when they see your rating is that low.
Even a 4.6 star rating is considered bad in a driver’s eye.
So if you are one of those passengers that gives an Uber driver a hard time and makes them wait longer than a minute or two to get in the car, then don’t be wondering if it starts taking longer than usual to get a ride.
There’s a lot of hate in the Facebook Uber groups, and some of the drivers in those groups will accept the low rated pax, text them they have a low rating, and then cancel the ride immediately after.
Of course eventually, somebody will accept the requests and take it for real, but I have had customers call me to make sure I was picking them up because the “last 3 drivers canceled on them.”
Other than the possibility of a longer wait time to get receive a ride, there isn’t anything else that will happen with a low rating.
The only other way for something bad to happen for the passenger would be if the Uber driver reported the passenger for being a minor, abusive, or did some kind of damage to the vehicle during the ride.
Then there would be the possibility of getting banned from using the platform. Anything minor Uber won’t worry about it.
If you are an Uber driver and never want to be matched with the same rider again, you will have to send a message to Uber support asking them to blacklist the passenger. I personally have never done this, but there are those drivers that do.
