5 Best Ways To Make Money With Your Car
Rideshare Apps/Services
Uber
If we’re talking about making money with your car, we have to start with Uber. If you haven’t heard of Uber, where have you been the past 5 years?
Just in case you haven’t heard of the popular car taxi-service, here is a quick rundown (this is also how most similar services work).
As a driver, you will have the Uber app downloaded on your smartphone. When you want to drive with Uber, you open the app, keep it running, and then wait.
- When a rider needs a lift somewhere, they request a driver.
- You’ll get a notification on your driver app.
- You accept the request, and the location and directions are automatically put in your phone.
- Pick up the passenger, drop them off, and just like that, you’re making money.
Uber is constantly improving their app and services for both the drivers and the passengers.
For example, they recently have updated their driver app with a feature that allows you to schedule your next passenger before you have dropped the current one off.
This means less time waiting and more money earned!
Your passengers can leave you reviews based on your driving, the cleanliness of your car, and how fun you were to ride with.
Every time a passenger is looking for a ride, they will see your review, which means you should clean up the Mountain Dew bottles before you start driving.
One area which Uber has perfected is getting your money.
They use Instant Pay. You don’t have to wait to get your money. You can transfer it straight into a linked bank account.
As a special bonus, when you’re using the Uber drive app, you get to listen to Pandora for free! No commercials are just an added perk of being an Uber driver.
But not everyone meets the requirements to be an Uber driver; there is a background check you’ll need to pass, among other items, such as these:
Requirements:
- Be at least 21-years-old
- Have a driver’s license
- Have a 4-door vehicle which meets Uber’s standards and your state’s legal standards
- Proof of insurance
- And pass a screening, which will include reviewing your driving records and criminal history/background check
Lyft
Lyft was created in 2012, a couple of years after Uber.
While they might be slightly younger, they are no less popular. Maybe you want to make some extra cash, but don’t want to use Uber.
Much like Uber, Lyft has an app dedicated to riders and drivers, respectively. Even if you aren’t extremely tech-savvy, the driver app is simple to use.
Once you’ve been approved to drive for Lyft, all you have to do is wait for a rider request to come through. Once it does, you have 15 seconds to either accept the request or decline it.
Why so short? Lyft wants the riders to get a driver as soon as possible.
Similar to Uber, there are qualifications to drive for Lyft, so it ensures only the most responsible people are hauling others around.
Requirements:
- 21-years-old with at least 1 year of driving experience
- Proof of insurance
- No more than 3 driving accidents or tickets in the past three years
- No DUIs in the past 7 years
- Your car must be 12 years or newer (depending on where you live)
Juno
Juno was recently acquired by Gett (another rideshare app). Instead of having both apps and programs, the company decided to only use Juno.
Juno is not the most popular rideshare program out there, but it should be on your radar if you live in New York.
Juno is only available in New York, but if you live in or around the city, we suggest checking it out.
What makes it different? The executives of Juno are putting their drivers first.
Juno only accepts the best drivers and they offer 24/7 support for their drivers.
To become a Juno driver, you will have to schedule an appointment with one of their recruiters. Based on information from other drivers, you have to meet a certain “rating” from either Uber or Lyft.
Which means you’ll need to be an experienced rideshare driver before you contact Juno.
Via
Like some of the other programs on our list, Via isn’t available everywhere.
It’s currently available in three cities:
- Washington, D.C.
- New York
- and Chicago
Here are some of the things which makes Via different than the other companies:
- You can earn a signing bonus, low service fees, and they can help you rent a car to get started.
- For riders, they can buy a 7-day pass for Via rides. This allows riders to get four rides a day.
Summon
Currently, Summon is only operational in the San Francisco Bay area.
Summon (formerly InstantCab) was created after their CEO stood around for an hour waiting on a bus and taxi.
Summon is a little different because it works with both everyday drivers and taxi drivers. With the app, you can either get a taxi or a regular car.
Don’t worry, you don’t have to have a taxi to be a Summon driver (but if you have one, it’s even better!)
Wingz
Wingz currently operates in 12 cities, and most of them are on the west coast.
Wingz is slightly different than the other rideshare apps on our list. The riders can schedule a ride for up to two months beforehand!
As a driver, you can work through the app to schedule times when you can accept rides.
Wingz was started as a service to help passengers get to and from the airport without having to pay sky-high rates; but they also do on-demand rides around airports, which is great for travelers or people going to events.
Requirements:
- 21-years-old or older
- Have insurance and a license
- A 4-door vehicle which is no older than 5 years old and in “excellent condition”
- Smartphone
- Pass a criminal background check, a DMV check, and pass an online orientation and knowledge check
iCarPool
iCarPool is taking the longtime trend of carpooling and adding a twist to it.
Built in Seattle, Washington, the ride-hailing service encourages users to save on pollution, wasted time, and gas money accrued from commuting by riding together.
As a driver, you essentially get paid to go wherever you were already headed, with a few extra passengers in tow.
As a rider, you pay a small fee to the driver’s reimbursement. Did we mention you get to use the HOV lane?
Requirements:
- In-state drivers license(at least one year old)
- A well-maintained vehicle that is kept clean
- Clean driving record
- Auto insurance as required by your state
- Android or iPhone
- A work, college, or university email in the area
HopSkipDrive
HopSkipDrive was created by moms for moms, to safely transport their children to and from school and events with peace of mind.
Founded in California, the app is available in the southern region of the state, the San Fransisco Bay area, and the Colorado-Front Range Area.
The service accomplishes those goals with an exhaustive vetting system for drivers, location tracking, and close monitoring.
One of HopSkipDrive’s coolest features allows you and other parents to book your children’s rides together, making the experience more fun and comfortable for them and convenient for you.
HopSkipDrive’s drivers, know as CareDrivers are carefully chosen and generously paid.
Below are the requirements you’ll need to meet to be a CareDriver.
Requirements:
- 23 years or older
- At least 5 years experience in childcare.
- A 4-door car, 2008 or newer.
- Clean driving record and proof of insurance proof.
- Clean background check and no criminal records.
Safr
Before you look at Safr, you should know, it’s only available in Boston.
On the surface, Safr looks just like every other rideshare out there.
Here is the twist: it’s a female only rideshare app.
Safr understands a lot of women are afraid to either be drivers with random strangers or to get in a strangers car.
To solve this, they created Saft.
For drivers, they can earn some extra money on the side, but with some peace of mind.
There are a lot of unique tools and benefits with Safr and their app. The drivers who are accepted by Safr are offered an awareness and ride safe training session.
Safr drivers are paid more than what other rideshare companies pay women drivers (according to their websites), and the app has an SOS feature, for safety.
If the driver or rider ever feels unsafe, all they have to do is hit the button and then the app can automatically call 911, a Safr employee, or their emergency contact.
Another cool thing about Safr is their safety technique of “color matching.”
When a rider matches with a driver, both of them are giving a color. They have to verify the color to ensure the driver is getting the right person and vice versa.
Requirements:
- You have to be 21 and have a valid driver’s license for three years
- Proof of insurance
- Pass a background check
- Never have been cited for reckless driving
- Vehicle has to be 10-years-old or newer
- Vehicle with no serious cosmetic damage
- Drive a 4-door sedan
Advertising With Your Car
CarVertise
If you do a lot of driving every year, you can make some extra money. You don’t have to do anything special, except let the company use your car as advertisement space.
How does it work?
- You’ll have to apply.
- The application is going to ask you about how much you drive and where you drive.
- After you’re approved, they will match you up with a brand who is looking to advertise in your area.
- They will wrap your car in the advertisement, and you’ll get paid every month.
At the end of the advertising campaign, they will take the wrap off and start looking for another match.
Based on the numbers from their site, drivers can earn anywhere from $300 – $1,200 per campaign (typically $100 a month, and up to $30/hour for parking at certain location at specific times).
Wrapify
Wrapify operates similarly to CarVertise–the main difference is how they match you with brands.
With Wrapify, all you have to do is download the app. Answer some questions, and then start driving like you normally would.
After you’ve driven at least 50 miles, then you can qualify for some of the advertisers.
The app will give them an idea of how much you drive and where you drive. They will use this information to connect you with brands who want to advertise based on your location and driving habits.
Depending on the campaign you qualify for, you can make $200 a month.
All you have to do is log your miles in the app.
Renting
Calling all car owners who’d like to earn money without driving or delivering!
If you have a well-maintained vehicle which doesn’t get driven often, the following rental services could be perfect for you.
HyreCar
Founded in 2015, the Los Angeles-based rideshare company operates in 35 states across the U.S.
Listing your vehicle for free through HyreCar is simple, and there is no cost or contract.
After you’re approved, you’ll be provided with rideshare insurance 24 hours prior to the car’s pickup time.
Once the insurance is verified, you can arrange a meeting with the driver, check their license, and hand over the keys.
From there, HyreCar pays you for the trip, and you coordinate another meeting to retrieve your vehicle.
HyreCar suggests its owners can make around $10,000 to $12,000 a year, with a daily rental rate of about $35 to $65.
The company explains that it pays owners a week after the first booking, then on a two-day schedule for the remainder of their time.
Requirements
- Vehicle registration
- Uber or Lyft inspection report
- Clear images of your car
- Description of the car
Turo
Like HyreCar, Turo allows you to list your vehicle to rideshare drivers for free, profiting with little effort.
The rideshare company was founded in 2009 in San Francisco and operates in the U.S., Germany, and Canada.
Turo provides $1 million of liability coverage, keeping your car protected.
It also allows you to set minimum daily trip costs and mileage, with an exchange process similar to HyreCar’s.
What do you make?
Turo claims to pay its drivers between 65-85% of the cost of the trip, directly deposited after 5 days.
If you opt out of Turo’s protection plan, you keep 90% of the trip’s earning.
Requirements
- License number, make, model, and year
- Clear photo(s) of the vehicle
- Description of the car.
Turo recommends you share special features, requirements, and reasons drivers should choose your car here.
Fluid Market
Do you have a truck you wouldn’t mind lending at your convenience?
If so, you may want to consider Fluid Market for your next cash venture.
The 2-year old, Denver-based company seeks to provide trucks for customers’ moving needs and profits for owners.
The terms of Fluidmarket are simple, as are their application requirements.
In addition to listing on the site, you can drive customers your way by posting ads on Craigslist and NextDoor.
Then, start renting.
Fluidmarket assures owners every renter is verified through a DMV background check.
You’re also covered by Fluidmarket’s $300,000 liability plan.
If you want to make your truck more available, use Fluidmarket’s Instabook feature, which lets you set up a lockbox for keys.
As a Fluidmarket lister, you earn weekly, netting 80% of earnings, which Fluidmarket says can be around $12,000 for pickup trucks and up to $24,000 for box trucks.
Requirements
- Jot down and enter your VIN
- Snap and submit a few photos of your truck
- Within 10 minutes, your truck can be listed.
BONUS: Making the Most of Renting or Selling
To maximize earnings with companies like Turo and HyreCar, many drivers buy a secondary car which meets Uber and Lyft’s basic requirements, then allow it to pay for itself in earnings.
Or if your car is sitting idly at home and renting is not an appealing idea, you can always opt to sell, a one-time way to make more cash on your vehicle.
On-Demand Delivery
Offering delivery services is another easy way to earn more money with your vehicle.
There are plenty of convenient delivery services that will help you make the most of your time and vehicle and pick up some extra money.
DoorDash
This San Francisco-based food delivery app was founded in 2013 by a group of Stanford students.
DoorDash now caters to 600 cities in the U.S. and Canada, partnering with 110,000 restaurants.

They then receive orders on the app to local restaurants and start making deliveries. There are no vehicle-specific requirements for DoorDash, a plus for drivers of older cars.
Dashers are paid per delivery and receive the full amount of any tips.
They are paid anywhere between 2-3 days after making a delivery.
DoorDash also works with Stride Health to provide affordable health care options to its drivers, too!
Health care, lack of vehicle requirements, and a user-friendly app make this company a ‘dashing’ alternative for money.
