A lot of people get confused when signing up for Uber. They think it’s really complicated. Well, the good news is it’s not.
Even if you don’t technically have a car right now. Uber can help you get one. But, I’ll get more into that later.
I’ve been driving for Uber since July 2015. And I enjoy it a lot. Meeting the different types of people that get into your car can be a great experience for any person.
Whether it’s just talking about each other getting to know one another or maybe learning something new from each other’s experiences through life.
Today, I wanted to show you how to become an Uber driver and how easy it is.
What Is Uber?
Everyday people will get into my car and tell me how they just discovered Uber. Never heard of it until last week. So, I’m just going to clarify that right now.
Uber is what could be called a transportation network company using a smartphone app to connect passengers with drivers using their own personal vehicle.
Though right now Uber added to their brand with a new food service called UberEats delivering food to your home.
Steps To Becoming An Uber Driver
OK. Now that you know what Uber Is. It’s time to show you how to become an Uber Driver.
- You will be asked to provide some personal information so Uber can perform a background check
- You will need to provide your vehicle information (Make, Model, year,etc..)
- Last you will be asked to upload pictures of your documents (Driver’s License, Insurance, Car registration).
Step 2– Get Your Car Inspected
The inspection isn’t difficult, but if you’re going to drive people around everything needs to be in working order. That’s only fair. The great thing about Uber is they will do the inspection for you for free.
I actually got $100 bonus just for letting them inspect my car which took them 10 minutes. That’s a pretty awesome bonus, right? When you sign up Uber will let you know where their car inspection locations are.
Of course, if you prefer to get your car inspected by a third party that’s totally fine too. Just check with Uber to make sure your car mechanic is approved to do your inspection.
Uber just wants to make sure things like your headlights, seat belts, mirrors, etc… are all in working order. Better safe than sorry right? Click here to see my Uber inspection form.
Step 3– Wait
Once you have done step 1 and 2, you just need to wait to clear the criminal and driver’s background check. Once cleared you will be able to start driving. You will be checked to make sure;
- You don’t have any felonies or other bad criminal records
- You don’t have too many driver infractions or accidents
- And of course, they will verify your documents are all up to date
It only took me 2 days to be approved to start driving after I got my car inspected, but my rule of thumb would be to give it at least a week before contacting Uber to see what your status is.
Once you are approved, Uber will send you an email letting you know you are all set and ready to drive. After a few days or week or so, you should receive in the mail your Uber sticker to place on your window.
Depending on where you live it’s a serious fine for not displaying the Uber sticker, so I would wait till you receive yours before you start driving.
Once all of the above is all set; Start driving!
You Are Ready To Drive For Uber
So, now that you are all set and have taken care of all the necessary directions to become an Uber driver, it’s time to start driving.
1.) Make sure you have downloaded the Uber Partner app on your iPhone or Android store.
2.) Log in to your account on the app
3.) Once logged in, you should see a “go online” button on top. Click on it to start receiving ride request.
If it doesn’t allow you to go online then Uber will let you know what step you are missing(either not finished uploading documents or maybe background hasn’t cleared yet.
4.) When on the map you will see your location and how busy an area is(color ranges from orange, means slightly higher prices, to blood red which means price are 3x times higher).
The Requirements To Become A Driver
Obviously, it wouldn’t be recommended to have some driver that’s just turned 16 and only has had a license for a week to get behind the wheel and drive others around for a living.
It would be dangerous and just plain out, not smart. So, I’m just going to give you quick summary of what’s required to drive for Uber.
1.) You must be at least 21 years of age
2.) You must have a car that is the year 2002 or newer (Varies by the city, some ask for a newer car).
3.) You must have a license from the same state, car insurance, car registration, and a smartphone.
4.) You must be able to pass the background check and have a fairly clean driving record
How To Become An Uber Select Driver
Already know your car qualifies for Uber Select, but not sure how to actually become a Select driver?
Let me explain the steps:
- You must sign up to drive as an Uberx or UberXL driver first. (You can’t skip to Uber Select without completing this step)
- You must complete 50-100 trips as an UberX or UberXL driver.
- You must maintain between 4.7-4.8 driver rating and maintain it. Aim for 4.8 to be safe.
- Once you complete steps 1-3 Uber should upgrade you automatically to receive Uber Select request. If they don’t send them a message.
As long your car qualifies in your city it should be pretty easy to complete these steps.
One thing to note: Depending on the city you drive in, you will also be required to maintain an 80% acceptance rate or above.
What If I Don’t Have A Car?
No Car, No Problem. The cool thing that Uber does is help you finance a car so you can still drive. While I have not used the service myself, Uber does state that bad credit or no credit can still get you a car.
In order to finance a car, you just need to fill out the online application, and then there will be an option for you to choose to finance as you fill it out.
If you do decide to finance a car through Uber’s program, please read the fine print. While this is a great option for somebody that needs a job and Uber’s their only option, you don’t want to end up financing a car that’s charging you out the roof interest.
So please, make sure you are asking those kinds of questions.
If you do finance, your car payment will be deducted from your weekly paychecks.
What If I don’t Have A Smartphone?
Another cool thing with Uber is they will let you rent a smartphone as well. Last time I checked, they were being rented in my area (San Francisco) for $10 dollars a week.
This isn’t such a bad deal considering most of the time you will make that $10 on the first ride you take. Of course, if you have the money, paying for your own smartphone would be a better investment if you are already paying for a phone that’s not a smartphone.
Update 2/25/2017: From my understanding, Uber no longer rents out smartphones. If you don’t have one you need to get one before you start driving
How Much Money Can You Make With Uber?
It varies depending on where you live and when you decide to work. If you only work on Friday and Saturday nights then you can expect to make a lot per hour.
If you only work Monday through Friday from 11:00 AM – 5:00 PM, then your hourly won’t be as good. There are nights where I make $15 an hour, but then other nights like a Saturday where I make $30+ an hour.
It still beats working at Mcdonalds and is totally worth it to me so I can have the freedom of being my own boss.
Of course, If you did do this full-time (40 hours a week) then there is a good possibility you will make $40,000+ in the year.
Here are a few good ideas to maximize your earnings for driving:
- Work during the busy hours (I like to work when the bars are closing, especially on a Saturday night cause I’m a night-owl)
- Don’t Chase Surge Pricing (Yes you make more money, but if it’s a 30-minute drive you might not make it before the surge is over).
- Use a fuel-efficient car (A Prius can get up to 50 miles a gallon saving you a lot of money on gas)
- Accepting every request ( I do here of people being online but not accepting request because they are “Too” far. You just lost out on a $60 fare)
- Make every passenger have a great experience (While there is technically no tipping through the app, many will tip you with cash)
Well, I hope I was able to help you out. Overall, Uber is a really great opportunity. It has helped me out a lot.
